Enterprise in Coastal West Sussex

Entrepreneurship & business formation will secure the long term economic growth of CWS.

Business formation per 100,000 residents is currently lower in CWS, with the exception of Chichester, than across West Sussex or the South East.

There is a growing need to take a long term view that high levels of business creation are essential for a sustainable future. It is important that every young person in schools, FE colleges and HE institutions are exposed to entrepreneurship.

The Coastal West Sussex Skills and Enterprise Group commissioned a report from the University of Chichester, Coastal West Sussex, Enterprise Skills Coordination that recommended an overall definition for enterprise education be developed (DFE 2010):

Enterprise – a set of skills and attitudes that can enable a culture of innovation, creativity, risk taking and entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship- spotting opportunities, creating new ideas and having the confidence and capability to turn these ideas in to working realities.

Enterprise Education – The core principle of Enterprise Education is to ensure young people are well equipped in facing the challenges of the world of work and entrepreneurship, resulting in a positive outcome for individuals, communities and the economy.
